The thread title doesn’t look absolutely correct, but let’s take it loosely . I’m not sure that many professional writers will visit the forum anyway, why not call it DIY then (doesn’t always mean it’s poor and worthless; likewise, not all professionally written and published literature is of the least value). And I do know that a couple of the forum members stated (on another website) that they take interest in writing of some sort, and I think they (we) may need a thread like this . Newcomers are welcome, of course.
The purpose of the thread is… well, I guess, like any other thread, it’s for sharing experience, giving tips, telling cool writing-related stories, promoting your projects after all (you remember we write for ourselves, but it feels so nice to attract others’ attention to it , well it can be also a bit of inspiration). I never contributed to such topics before, don’t even recall seeing them… more often they were places to post some pieces of your writing (which no one commented and probably didn’t bother to read). I suggest only talking about our writing here and not posting the excerpts directly, but, well, there’s an exception to every rule. It’d be better yet to give a link to a site other people could read your work on (instead of pasting a portion of a text here). The English language is preferable, but Google Translate may come in useful too (only don’t forget your writing style will be totally destroyed by it).
If you want to tell about your creative development, but don’t know where you should begin, you can follow the scheme: when and why you first decided to write, what you are currently working on (form and genre, themes or kinds of plots you prefer), what is the most important thing that you try to express and describe (romantic feelings, strong characters, the law of responsibility, inner compulsions and so on).
I wrote my first short story when I was about 9 (don’t remember if I did anything earlier, it was barely two years since I’d started to learn to write). My desire for writing has always stemmed from imaginary characters and situations they were involved in. Sometimes I can trace back their sources, sometimes I can’t. My own dreams, people who impress me, some other texts (including songs’ lyrics), movies/music videos, and music I love (or not too much, but there’s still something I take out of it), even accidentally seen pictures lie behind the better part of my stories. And my life experience for sure, but I guess it serves more often as a sort of cement for the elements, and only rarely as a surge of inspiration (it certainly did sometimes though).
My preferred genre for writing has always been fantasy prose, most probably because I never cared for the limits of real life, and I’m not sensitive enough to write poetry . There’s a touch of romance and horror to my fiction, but I’m not sure what it comes from. It’s hardly related to my life experience, most likely it’s inspired by my preferences (although I don’t get it why my experience and preferences don’t seem to be related). Well, doesn’t matter… Another feature of my writing is love for long forms; my first piece was a short story, but I continued developing the plot very soon. As for now, I have 3 novels at different stages of completion, and I work mainly on the oldest of them (actually I started it almost half a life ago). There are several short stories (not all of them finished) and some vague plans of new pieces, but I feel like working on just one of them now. I didn’t some years before, so I'd better strike while the iron is hot .
Actually my issue about writing is that it’s almost entirely spontaneous, and I just can’t get it right when the time is not yet ripe. I mean I have a plan, but I can’t make myself elaborate when I have time but no desire. And when I can, I tend to get distracted, so my progress is incredibly slow (not to mention that I prefer ideal working conditions). Well, it’s 260, 000 words already, but it’s not even half of my draft (don’t forget that I started around 2006). However, I feel quite ambitious about it… haven’t tried to promote it anywhere, so I’m still able to dream . But I do realize that sending anything to a publisher is a dead duck nowadays. Well, unless it’s something made strictly for good sales. My novel is too long for that already, let alone other details… I believe the Internet can do me a better favor if used wisely. That lies ahead though.
Back to my writing, the plotline almost always appears to be going back to the past to understand the sense of the weird present events (and to make a right choice in the end). It’s what it comes to though; it starts from the unknown characters I want to get to know. I like to follow what my subconscious suggests - it always turns out to be the most natural and unusual developing at the same time. I just can’t write a word when I try to make it be more “normal” (because I don’t always get myself why something like this is going on). However, my manner of storytelling is simple - just what was felt and said and done because of it. I used to have a fancy writing style, but then abandoned it, and felt happy
So, what about you?

Strictly speaking, I didn't describe in detail what I write about, but if you'll be still curious after reading the post, I can make up some sort of a summary

I write a lot of different things. I think you should come tell me and everyone else what you you want, when you want. Whatever you are comfortable with. It is nice to have other people read our works, and I enjoy reading friends writings and encouraging them. 🙂
If you don't mind me asking, what country are you from/live in? England?...I need to read your post in the 'introduce yourself' thread AGAIN. Thoroughly. And again, apologies for being in a hurry last night. I really do stay very busy most of the time. Me?...I'm Texan. 🙂

England?? That's a nice compliment, thank you . But no, I live in the capital of Ukraine (Eastern Europe), and yes, I'm relatively safe (in case it might be your next question ). I like to learn what places others come from too. Actually it's a shame there's no option to display a user's location below their avatar or nickname, you have to look up their profile for that. And I didn't mention my place of living in my first "introduce yourself" post, so you don't need to read it again (well, you can if you want, of course ). I told about that later when talking with Dizzy in that thread, but one has to scan through quite a few messages to find that detail out, and you probably didn't have time. But I don't think you should apologize for being in a hurry . We can't help being busy, it's our life... and so we should all of us really appreciate the bits of spare time we can dedicate to one another here .
I didn’t know there are wolves in Texas . What can you say about your state? I learn a bit about each one from people here. Dizzy is happy in Illinois, Dev dies of hot summers in South California, and you…?
And will you tell more about the kinds of texts you write? “Different” is a broad term indeed… some examples would help, like “I’m working hard on the 3rd part of my epic poem about cosmic camels, but like to switch to the series of satiric articles when I need a break” .
Encouraging creative people is one of the sweetest things I can think of . Sadly, I’ve never managed to make good friends with many of those (I haven’t actually made friends with many people at all ). I know a girl though who wrote beautifully, but she lacks time and inspiration now (she’s very busy with her teaching), although she still doesn’t give up hope of creating some good stories. Well, she shouldn’t as long as she’s alive. Everything can change any minute… and for the better . She’s basically the only one aspiring writer I know personally, ‘cause she was my groupmate at university. But she’s been living in China for a decade or so by now. We emailed just last year and planned to work a little on our writing skills; but her family stays in Ukraine, and she can’t concentrate on any creative project now that it’s an ongoing war here .
So I try to gather some other writing people around me. A little company of encouraging friends is always good . However, as you may have guessed, the language of my works is not English (I take it you don’t speak Russian?), so you’re saved from reading them for now . But, like my above-mentioned friend used to say, “When I become a famous writer…”
I did write a couple of short stories in English, but I’m not sure if a native English speaker can read them without cringing . Also, the plot is rather odd and mawkish. But if you wonder why I wrote such a piece at all, I can tell that I just had to, I was inspired . If I have more ideas for creative writing in English, maybe I’ll reach a decent level in a dozen years or so… That’s not a priority though. Still a lot of work to do on my novels.
But I promised to tell what they’re about. A story I’m mostly working on is generally about spiritlike beings who possessed various powers important for the existence of the material universe (I hope it’s bombastic enough ). The beings were nearly impossible to capture; but an evil wizard (who else) happened to lock one of them in some magical cage of his and isolated it from the universe. Considering that the being possessed the power of changing, that could eventually lead to the total world(s) collapse. But then there was a superhero a girl (young and beautiful, of course) who was on verge of becoming one of those power-possessedpossessing beings (you see, most of them were low-born and didin’t get their powers at once), and she was involved in it all without even realizing what was going on. But she was explained some things and finally freed the captured being. However, the happy end was marred by some issues the absence of changing had already caused. The girl solved a couple of them, and then the 1st part of the novel is over, but it’s long enough to be a standalone book. I have a draft of the following 3 books (they’re all written from different characters’ viewpoints), and a vague idea of a sequel; but I’d rather tell about them when I get to them (they can change yet). It's obvious though that the characters will be dealing with the consequences of the story described above (as well as finding out some interesting things about the past). How did I call it in my initial post? The law of responsibility? That must be it .
Another novel consists of many short stories about different people and creatures that seem very concrete, but the novel idea is rather abstract. Maybe something about existence . I’ve been writing a synopsis of it (I initially wrote it in an old notebook, but it's better to have it in the cloud or on a HDD just in case), and I clearly see a few recurrent symbols and themes - of water, flowing, infinity, breaking free, searching. Some odd stuff .
I only wrote the beginning of my “youngest” novel (started in 2014), but I do have a loose concept of it. The 1st part tells about three guys who are mysteriously tied together, but only one of them fully realizes why. Another one is a psychic and feels something weird about it while the third one hasn’t got a clue what’s going on. Then they’ll have to turn to another sort of beings to get to the core of their really troubled relationship. I suppose a good ending, but it can easily come out not in the least like I expected .
If you have read something like this (everything I said about my novels), I’d appreciate your telling me, because I wouldn’t want to be an unwilling plagiarist (that’s pretty easy, ‘cause so many stories have been told already) .

Good day from here, JohanneSoulless ! Oh man, had no idea you were in the Ukraine. I am very happy to here you are safe! Thank God. Prayers and all good wishing and willing for you and your country!
Like I said last night, I need to read everything thoroughly. I've been so pressed for time I have skimming the best I can, With very long posts like yours, I normally read 2 or 3 times before answering.
For now, yes I know poor Dev suffers from the heat, and that Diz is in Chicago. It gets very hot where I am in North Texas. The heat doesn't bother me, I love it. 🙂
And briefly...I write short stories and poems....for the most part. I might post a link to some things, but I want to ask Deviancy 's permission first. I came here to enjoy this board and the company, not to advertise, recruit or detract from Ookie Spookie in any way.
I think this is a wonderful place, and would love to see it grow!🙂
I'm just checking in at the moment, I work from home. I am an artist. My avatar is a work of mine I did a few years ago. 🙂

I really like them, and appreciate them. I still haven't found the post, but have one somewhere that towards the bottom of you had what looked like 'English slang/patois'. That had me thinking you might be from or around England. 🙂
There is another thing you have said somewhere, about MB's compared to other social media.... (I take mental note of things to come back to)....and how many people today seem to post things on SM, or read items there from others, and forget about it. I cannot remember what it was you said verbatim, but it stuck in my mind, and I thought about it a lot. I don't do that. Like I said before, normally I'll read 2 or 3 times before answering. I'm not inattentive or careless, just pressed for time often and have to resort to scanning and getting to point. It's frustrating at times, and I will apologize if I feel I might have come across as rude or disinterested. That must be it .Another novel consists of many short stories about different people and creatures that seem very concrete, but the novel idea is rather abstract. Maybe something about existence . I’ve been writing a synopsis of it (I initially wrote it in an old notebook, but it's better to have it in the cloud or on a HDD just in case), and I clearly see a few recurrent symbols and themes - of water, flowing, infinity, breaking free, searching. Some odd stuff .I only wrote the beginning of my “youngest” novel (started in 2014), but I do have a loose concept of it. I suppose a good ending, but it can easily come out not in the least like I expected .If you have read something like this (everything I said about my novels), I’d appreciate your telling me, because I wouldn’t want to be an unwilling plagiarist (that’s pretty easy, ‘cause so many stories have been told already) . "epic poem about Cosmic Camels" 😊 Man, I really like that. That's the kind of thing that get the gears of my strange imagination really licking and whirring. I would love to read that some day. 😊 Sigh....I gotta go for awhile again, my time and attention is needed elsewhere at the moment. I hope you're having a really good day J. Laters. 🙂

Thank you a lot, dear The Wolf . I appreciate your offer, especially since English isn't my first language, and you know that but still invite me to participate . Sadly, you are right that I'm not able to take the offer now. But I reckon I can make it next year if you continue with the project (and your editors can prepare for having hard time with my future contribution ). By the way, setting up clear goals during unstable times makes one feel more focused and energetic, so your offer is good for me even though I can't accept it
Although I do have a bit of spare time just now and plan to edit my English-language short stories (I mentioned them before) to publish them on Wattpad (one has to be registered with the website to read the texts, but I can send them to you directly). I'll let you know when they're ready; after you have a look at them, you may change your mind about inviting me . It isn't necessary, of course. Just in case you want to be sure who you're going to introduce to your fellow writers . And I'm not publishing the stories for that purpose. Just feel like doing this before I totally immerse myself in more mundane activity for I don't know how long . I can't be at the same point in a year though, because I just don't have resources for that. So, if all goes according to the plan, I'll be glad to join next year's writing project!
