So, here's some dark fantasy, or what I believe it is (something a bit less innocuous than, say, fairy unicorns, although I do love them). I couldn't find credits for the first pic and would be glad to know the artist's name if anyone recognizes their work. Google images search disappointed me
Back to the unicorns, it could well be an illustration for P. Beagle's The Last Unicorn novel, namely for a scene when the unicorn was magically turned into a girl. I don't recall if there was a river, but a castle defintiely was. Or it could be a medieval-styled play of The birth of Venus... but that ray of light confuses me. Did she fall out of the sky? The following works are by Kirsi Salonen, a Finnish fantasy artist. I noticed there’s always something realistic and even baleful about her characters. Actually I’m not a big fan of pure fantasy stuff (beautiful elves, majestic dragons, etc), but I admire some early metaphorical works of hers (at least, I looked through her website and didn’t find many like those; but I’m not sure all her drawings are demonstrated there, I didn’t even find some pics I post).
The pics with animals kind of point out that we people tend to overestimate appearance… or underestimate the dead, hard to say And this one could be a classic representation of “the cruel world and an innocent soul” phenomenon…Well, the next one I saw for the first time just a couple days ago, but it reminded me immediately of those drawings of animals and weird creatures. It’s a bit different here, but I see the same idea (maybe the topic speaks to me).Now to some horror. There are only few artists whose works make me actually shudder, and Zdzisław Beksiński was one of those. These days his style doesn’t impress me like it used to, but I still think it’s gross And to move away a bit, I’d like to post some works by a Russian artist Kirill Chelushkin, which probably influenced my mind when I was a child, that’s why it became receptive to all sorts of weird things I had a children’s book of Japanese folk tales illustrated by Chelushkin. I remembered those drawings ever since and was able to find out the artist’s name when I got Internet access (in 15 years or so after I had the book on my hands for the last time).
He created many more, but his style is unmistakable (like any good artist’s should be). P.S. Just why do I think that surreal art is often dark? Because it challenges common sense, and that makes you scared - so subtly that you don't even realize your fear, or so obviously that you fly into a rage and scream that you despise stupid shit like this. But anyway...

Well, that thread was called "For Starters", so you showed up there as "a starter". A proper thing to do, I think . I personally thought that thread was created for an example, but people started to post other pics there (they probably understood its purpose better than I did), so it's now more like "Say hi with any pic you like" . I'm sure you'll be able to find other suitable pics for this thread. In case they don't really seem suitable, you can create another thematic pictures thread... oh, I just thought of a thread for a dark kind of photography, although it could be posted here as well. What do you think, The Wolf? Is it just me or you would, too, prefer separate threads for drawings/paintings and photograps of real objects? To me, horror-themed photos or photocollages (often used for fantasy/surreal pics, alhtough the objects themselves are real) create an atmosphere of their own which clashes a bit with pics made with pencils and paints. On the other hand, I wouldn't like to create an unnecessary thread (although no one is going to check if it's necessary or not ). Not sure if there's any sense to be that meticulous ...

Why not put them here? When it comes to this kind of art H.R. Giger is a great!
This photo of Debbie Harry of "Blondie" fame taken by Giger, and below it, the artist himself....

The Wolf, I'm popping in just to say two things: first, thanks for your enthusiastic participation (I'll comment on the pics your brought here a bit later) . Second, there's a thread for pictures of "spooky chicks", and you can post something there too, if you wish. I mean the pic of the girl reminding you of Dizzy suits that thread as well as this one. Maybe you have some more arts like that in your collection . You decide for yourself where to post them, of course; I just thought you might have not seen that thread by Dev yet (but it could be suitable for some pics you may want to post sometime) . Bye for now, best wishes
